Tracing beneficiaries is not only time consuming but fraught with challenges and difficulties, especially where the search for a beneficiary takes the practitioner to beyond the English and Welsh borders.

It is an unfortunate part of modern-day life that increasing numbers of people are dying alone. Public health funerals used to be the preserve of the homeless, but are now much more widespread. People don’t have as much disposable income, and they are living longer.

David Lockwood has been appointed public sector development manager with probate genealogist Finders International. He has worked for Greenwich, Havering, Islington and Medway Borough councils in a variety of roles.

More than £100,000 in unclaimed estates is up for grabs in Paisley, it has been revealed.

According to heir hunters Finders International, there are currently 15 unclaimed estates in the town with a value of £105,000.

Normally, when a person dies their assets revert to a named person but sometimes relatives cannot be traced.

There are vast sums of money lying around in unclaimed estates, and lots of unsuspecting heirs: eligible individuals and next of kin, who are oblivious to the fact that they are owed money. Left unclaimed, the banks and insurance companies are often the beneficiaries of these ‘assets in purgatory’.

Heir hunters are warning that millions of pounds worth of inheritance could end up in the wrong hands because of a surge in the number of estates registered incorrectly as intestate.
