Finders International is delighted to announce that its charity of the year for 2022 is Keep Britain Tidy.
Keep Britain Tidy is an independent charity with three goals – to eliminate litter, end waste and improve spaces, creating clean beaches, parks and streets through sustainable practices and the elimination of waste.
The organisation works with people, businesses, organisations and public bodies to care for the environment and fights for people’s rights to live and work in places they can be proud of and prosper in.
200 million tonnes of waste
According to the charity, in the UK we use around 570 million tonnes of resources each year, 8.9 tonnes for every person in the UK. This results in the creation of 200 million tonnes of waste a year.
Most waste is created by the construction and demolition sectors, but UK households produce more than 27 million tonnes of waste every year and throw away 25 percent of all food and drink bought for consumption.
Keep Britain Tidy believes that if companies make it easy for people to do the right thing, then, by and large, they will. The charity calls on manufacturers to champion a more circular economy that normalises design for sustainability and prohibits hard to recycle materials entering the market.
Government needs to act
It also wants governments to enshrine the EU Circular Economy package in UK law and actively explore how we might go further. Government departments such as Defra, MHCLG, BEIS and HM Treasury must ensure that policies, targets, industrial sector plans, financial incentives and taxation are aligned to drive the value chain towards a more circular economy and a more sustainable future.
Last year, Finders International supported the charity and took part in the spring clean, which took place between 28 May and 13 June, where staff carried out the ‘Pledge to Pick’ volunteering where they spent an hour of the working week picking up litter in their local area.
This year, Finders is planning a number of different activities throughout the year to raise money for the charity.
Finders International founder and CEO, Danny Curran said: “Here at Finders, we feel strongly about the environment and preserving it for future generations. Contributing to Keep Britain Tidy allows us to play a part in improving our local area, and volunteering to take part in litter picking gives our staff a break from their desks and to go outside, which has positive benefits for their mental health and welfare.
“We’re looking forward to helping promote the positive message Keep Britain Tidy embodies.”
